EVERYTHING KETO

What foods to avoid on the keto diet?

So maybe you’ve decided, are considering or already started the keto diet and are wondering what kind of foods you shouldn’t be eating anymore, or maybe it’s unclear what foods to avoid on a keto diet.  That’s a good question, right!?

Before we start getting into it, I believe that it’s important to understand what macronutrients are to fully understand what a carb (carbohydrate) is.  Any carbs should be consumed in moderation on the keto diet as it should only account for 5% of your daily macronutrient intake. As you probably know by now, you need to consume a diet consisting of high fat and low carbs. Foods to avoid on a keto diet are grains, bread, sweets, beans, pasta, rice, most fruits and high-carbs vegetables such as corn, peas, beets and potatoes. Some higher-carbs vegetables can be used in small portion and in moderation such as carrots, onions (specially caramelized) and root vegetables. The important factor here is using them sparingly and limiting their intake.  The best way to know if you are consuming the proper macronutrients, specially at first as you get accustomed to the new lifestyle, is to track what you eat or look it up.  As you get started, its easier to aim at completely staying away from carbs altogether.  They are sneaky and even when trying to not consume them, you will still end up getting some from some vegetables you will be consuming.

Keto diet, foods to avoid, not to eat

    1. Hi Catherine,

The best vegetables to eat on the keto diet would be spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, kale, zucchini, celery, mushrooms, cabbage, green bell peppers, asparagus, cucumbers and tomatoes to name the most common ones I would say. However I suggest keeping track of what you consume at the beginning (I suggest My Fitness Pal app) so you really learn how and which vegetables can really affect your daily macros and the quantities. You would want to ensure you don’t consume too many tomatoes, colored bell peppers and green beans for example. As they are low in carbs but a bit higher then the other ones I mentioned above, they could accumulate pretty quickly in your daily intake. You can find more information on my “what foods to eat on the keto diet” post! 🙂

The vegetables that I would recommend staying away from on keto would be potatoes, beets, corn, peas and squash. I would be careful in my consumption of carrots and onions. I wouldn’t completely remove them since they bring color and taste to some great recipes however, I would ensure to include it in my daily carb count to ensure I would stay in my daily limits.

      Hope this helps!
      Take care
      Nat 🙂
